Willy Wood is an expert on how the human brain learns and effective teaching practices. As an educational consultant who presents on a variety of brain-compatible teaching topics, Willy Wood is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on the human brain and learning, as well as in school districts across the United States. In addition to his presentations, Willy Wood often consults with school districts on a variety of educational issues and frequently observes teachers and gives feedback regarding their methods and effectiveness.
In addition to his presenting and consulting work, Willy Wood is the publisher of a monthly e-newsletter, Neuro News, which keeps teachers abreast of cutting edge research on educational topics. He is also the co-author, along with Rich Allen, of The Rock ‘n’ Roll Classroom: Using Music to Manage Mood, Energy, and Learning. This one-of-a-kind book, scheduled for publication in fall 2012, shows teachers how to use music in a variety of ways in the classroom—to improve student mood, manage student energy levels, improve on-task focus, and increase retention of content.
In other professional endeavors, Willy Wood coordinates two annual teachers’ conferences—the Missouri Early Learning Conference and the Write to Learn Conference—through Educational Solutions International, which he leads as President. The Missouri Early Learning Conference is designed for pre-K to third grade teachers, and the Write to Learn Conference is designed for K-12 language arts teachers.
A graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Willy Wood received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in English degrees from that institution, completing both degrees summa cum laude. As an undergraduate, he participated in the international English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, and served as the poetry editor for the university’s literary magazine. He went on to study at Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English and the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he taught for five years while engaged in studies toward a Doctor of Philosophy degree in creative writing.
Willy Wood has taught at both the high school and university levels and has served as the Communication Arts Consultant for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the International Reading Association (IRA), and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
In his spare time, Willy Wood greatly enjoys sports. He has coached a variety of youth and high school level sports over the years. He is an avid follower of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and the University of Missouri athletic squads. He is also a voracious reader, especially of science fiction and fantasy, as well as works about the brain and education—subjects he frequently writes about.
